How Exercise Can Help Curb Emotional Eating
Emotional eating is one of the fastest ways that anyone can gain weight. Ladies are particularly prone to this for some reason or another. Perhaps it is because women are more prone to giving in to their emotions. Most women can relate to the movies that portray the stressed women characters wolfing down packs of chips or a gallon of ice cream in one sitting simply because she’s upset. So whether man or woman, how does one avoid this pitfall of weight gain? Many point to exercise not only as a weight-loss inducer but also as an effective fight against emotional eating.
First, exercise releases endorphins, hormones that are called “happy hormones” in fitness circles. The reason why it is called such is obvious. This is the hormone apparently responsible for stirring up happy emotions. As such, when these hormones are released into the body, the person tends to feel less stressed. This results in a lower propensity to look to the refrigerator for a happy fix.
Second, exercise takes up some time, which might otherwise have been spent in front of the tube munching on greasy chips. The general way that exercise fills up one’s schedule is also a strong factor in its fighting emotional munching. For example, when you add a mile’s worth of walking to your day, during that time when you are actually pumping your arms and moving your legs, you will be less likely to think about food. This mode of distraction is much more helpful than simply trying to will yourself not to eat. After all, the more you concentrate on not doing something, the more you will wind up giving in to it. Instead, doing exercise to occupy yourself will most likely have much better results. And, these results will tend to be permanent as soon as the routines become part of habit.
Lastly, exercise gives one’s body a general good feeling. After all, when you feel active and healthy, you will also be less prone to destroy your body will junk food. It’s the general way that the human body reacts. When you identify yourself as being healthy, you will not likely overstuff yourself with unhealthy food. But when you see yourself as being fat and unhealthy, you will also feel that you deserve all those unhealthy snacks and could do no better.
These are the main ways in which exercise can help you avoid being an emotional eater. Once you try some workout routine, you will notice one or all of these things happening. Rest assured, you will also feel much happier as well as healthier from not giving in to food cravings every time you feel them. Who would want to be enslaved by the refrigerator or the food cupboard, anyway?
